Alexander C. Adia
UC Berkeley Health Policy PhD Candidate
I am a fourth year doctoral student in Health Policy (Population and Data Science Track) at the University of California, Berkeley. I plan to graduate in Spring 2027 and will be on the 2026-2027 academic job market.
I consider how policy and market changes impact patient welfare, especially affordability and quality of care. My doctoral research centers two important topics of interest in healthcare services and policy:
1) Commercialization of healthcare provision and impact on patients, with a focus on hospital ownership by for profit status, system affiliation, and private equity ownership
2) Affordability of healthcare and cost burden for patients, with a focus on medical debt and impact of health policy
I also hold a specific interest in how policies impact inequities in health by income, insurance coverage, and race/ethnicity, built off my extensive pre-doctoral research experience on topics related to health equity.
To support my doctoral research, I have won a total of $238,875 in grant funding from external funders, including the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), National Institute for Healthcare Management (NIHCM) Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy Research.
